If there’s anything good about our growing political divide in this country, it’s that liberals are getting more and more comfortable saying what they actually mean. Knowing that it takes a firm, extreme point of view to get those clicks rolling in, left-wing authors and politicians are increasingly doing something that used to be absolutely forbidden in their political circles: Telling the truth.
Well, the truth about their ultimate agenda, anyway.
Case in point: This article from Dylan Matthews at Vox. In it, he makes a number of startling revelations. Such as: All that talk about background checks and stuff? Yeah, that’s not going to do a damn thing to actually bring gun violence down. Oh, and you know all those crazy Republicans who come out of the woodwork to scream about how the Democrats want to take your guns away? Er, well, this is embarrassing, but you know, actually, that’s exactly what we want to do.
From Vox:
Congress’s decision not to pass background checks is not what’s keeping the US from European gun violence levels. The expiration of the assault weapons ban is not behind the gap. What’s behind the gap, plenty of research indicates, is that Americans have more guns. The statistics are mind-blowing: America has 4.4 percent of the world’s population but almost half of its civilian-owned guns.
Realistically, a gun control plan that has any hope of getting us down to European levels of violence is going to mean taking a huge number of guns away from a huge number of gun owners.
Other countries have done exactly that. Australia, for example, enacted a mandatory gun buyback that achieved that goal, and saw firearm suicides fall as a result. But the reforms those countries enacted are far more dramatic than anything US politicians are calling for — and even they wouldn’t get us to where many other developed countries are.
To be sure, Matthews knows he’s just writing into the void.
“Large-scale confiscation is not going to happen,” he concludes. “That’s no reason to stop advocating it. (I also want to repeal all immigration laws and give everyone a monthly check from the government with no strings attached, and will argue for those ideas even though they’re not politically viable.) But it does mean that we should be realistic about what gun control with an actual shot of passage can achieve. It can make us safer. It cannot make us Europe.”
His is a defeatist article meant for liberals to wallow in. But for the rest of us, it should be an eye-opener. The left is beginning to get a little more honest about what they really want to achieve. And the more they come unmasked, the more people will start to see them for the radicals that they are. That can only be a good thing.
